Questions and answers
Switchboard Upgrades: common questions
How do I know if my switchboard needs upgrading?
Repeated operation of a protective device should be investigated rather than treated as proof that the whole board is faulty. We also assess old fuses, damage and circuit-space needs, then explain the repairs or upgrade supported by those findings.
Will I lose power during the work?
Yes. In a shared building, the affected supply and access arrangements should be established before setting the shutdown. We explain the anticipated interruption and any meter or network coordination needed for the agreed upgrade.
Do you replace old ceramic fuses?
Yes. The proposed replacement includes assessment of the existing circuits and specification of suitable protective devices. We also identify any wiring issue that must be addressed before those circuits are connected to the upgraded board.
Will every circuit receive a safety switch?
Protection is specified against the circuits involved in the upgrade. We explain the RCD or RCBO arrangement and test the completed work; wiring problems that prevent reconnection need to be resolved separately from fitting the new devices.
Can I add an EV charger at the same time?
We can coordinate those plans, checking the charging demand against the property or building supply. The board design then accounts for the agreed charging circuit and protection, with any shared-building requirements identified before work is arranged.
What if the old panel contains asbestos?
If the panel may contain asbestos, we stop and arrange for the material and removal requirements to be assessed before it is disturbed. We explain how this affects the scope and coordinate the electrical work with the appropriate asbestos handling arrangements.
Does strata need to approve an apartment switchboard upgrade?
A board within a lot can still have connections to shared equipment. We identify the proposed scope and any effect on common property or building supply, so strata permissions and access can be settled before the upgrade.
Will a new switchboard stop every electrical fault?
Replacing the board addresses the agreed equipment and protection, not every possible fault downstream. Damaged wiring or an appliance defect still needs investigation and repair; the affected circuits are checked before they are restored.
